Fashion 101 with Damika Colbert, Stylist

Our choice of clothing can be one of our most creative forms of self expression. Wearing a great outfit somehow brightens up a lousy day, makes you feel confident in a tough situation, and even gives you the courage to walk through a crowd full of on-lookers. Like it or not in our visually image obsessed world, we are assessed many times a day based on what we are wearing.

In creating greats looks for yourself, you must first know your body.  Always know what works for you (fabrics, etc.)Not for your girlfriend or the size you “hope” to be. Remember, every body type is perfect and manageable.  In fact you can still look stylish even if a hot trend doesn’t work for you.  There’s always more than one trend per season so find trends that suit your shape and your tastes.

After you’ve figured out your creative, confident style, lets take a look at the must have accessories.  No matter what style you’re going for-preppy, funky, sexy, sophisticated, sporty- you can turn yourself into a more memorable dresser by adding some class to everything you wear There are the scarves, the gloves, the glasses(or sun glasses), the hats, the jewelry(bracelet, necklace, earrings, watches, rings, bangles), the hair extensions, the bags, and brooches. There are a multitude of accessories that will turn an ordinary outfit into a personal fashion statement. But be sure not to “over accessorize”.

Your clothes, your tastes, your body silhouette-combined, these are the criteria for choosing the right accessories.  And your age definitely plays a part too.  While a younger girl may prefer trinkets, chunkier jewelry tends to play well with the more sophisticated woman.  That’s not to say you can’t be sassy and bold as you grow older (smile). A common style mistake for women is to dress wither to young or too old for their age.  Style can and should evolve as you grow older.   Now this is just a general illustration in the direction that should be taken over the years….

In your teens

You probably prefer simple things like tanks tops, t-shirts, and jeans. These styles are easy and fun.  And when you want to be more fashionable and classic you go for the skirts and polo shirts.

In your twenties

You may want to try a tight pair of jeans with a crisp white button down shirt, a funky belt, and boots or heels.  If you’re not sure about your figure go for solid colors & not necessarily the tight jeans, but a younger fitted trouser.

In your thirties

If your figure starts to change (having kids) wear a blousier but not baggy silhouettes.  You don’t want to wear things that are too tight or to thin.  Go for separates that give you clean classic lines that can never be ruined.  You can even wear pieces underneath that have vertical detailing in terms of color, texture, and patterns.

It is important to understand that you don’t have to compromise your style because of your age.  As people grow older, they become afraid of losing their sense of style due to all the physical changes.  Never abandon your will for being fashionably creative.

It’s commonly known that women have a love for shoes. You will collect more shoes than anything in your lifetime.  Shoes can take your from frumpy to dazzling. They can right an outfit that has gone wrong.  They can change your posture as well as your attitude, instantly giving your legs a different silhouette.  If you ever want energy, wear a heel (boot), or wedge. Now if you are in a more casual environment where a flat.

Like your clothes your closet reflects who you are.  An organized closet belongs to an organized person.  So think of your closet as a sacred ground.  When you open it you should fell like it holds the secret to how your day is going to turn out. In organizing your closet it should contain only the seasonal garments you need.  The next step is to divide tops and bottoms and then categorize them according to color.  Graduate your tones from whites, to powdered blue, to gray, to black, and so on.  If space permits divide your work and play clothes.  For example keep one side reserved for skirts and suits for the office and the other side for nights and weekend garments.  The goal is never to have to hunt for a particular item.  An organized closet will reward you with time.
